Wright Art Studio presents:
Beginning Digital Photography Fall Session (8-week class starting Oct. 3, 2008) View current critiques from the Fall Semester.
Course Description: The power of the digital camera as a tool for learning to see is unprecedented. Because of its ability to give the photographer instant feedback, it can accelerate learning and push the bounds of creativity. This class takes advantage of these attributes and aims to help students see and react better. At its heart, the class will teach the craft of photographyhow to make a picture, rather than simply take one. It will also teach you the elements that make a great photographhow to practice awareness, frame, use light and color, and make the camera record how you see the world. COURSE SYLLABUS WEEK 1: The Decisive Moment (or, Photographing With the Soul) WEEK 2: Vantage Point (or, How to Be a Worm, a Bird, or a Can of Tuna) WEEK 3: Pattern, Texture, Shape (or, The Herbs and Spices of Photography) WEEK 4: Foreground/Background (or, Bringing Depth to the 2-D World) WEEK 5: Light as Subject (or, Photographer as Sculptor) WEEK 6: Rule of Thirds (or, Architecture 101) WEEK 7: Color (or, Less is More) WEEK 8: Final Project (or, Putting It All Together) What this class is NOT: • a forum for finding “the best” camera to buy • a list of “tricks of the trade” • a forum to learn what every button of your camera does (I couldn’t tell you anyway) • a Photoshop Class How this online class works: • Lessons and related assignments are issued Friday. An email sent to you will include a secret website link to the online lesson. In the lessons, I will introduce a concept like vantage point and explain/illustrate it with imagery from my own photography, examples from other photographers, and even classic paintings. • Students will shoot all week and edit down to 3 photographs for review. Shoot, shoot, shoot. There are no film costs and every frame is a chance to learn. • I will be available via email all week to answer questions. • Students will email their photos to me by Thursday PM. I will post them with comments on Friday. Don’t be intimidatedthe positives and directions for improvement will be the focus. All students can view each other’s work online (critical for everyone to learn from other’s work). Pre-requisites: • a digital camera (or film camera with scanner) • a way to upload pictures to your computer. • enough basic editing knowledge to resize your photos and send them via email (I can get you up to speed if you are just starting.) • internet access to view your pictures/critiques online Cost: If you wish to enroll, please send an email to rick@wrightartstudio.com as soon as possible, followed with a check for $250 to reserve your space.
